VITA: Earned Income Tax Credit

About EITC?

Earned Income Tax Credit is a refundable federal tax credit for people who worked all or part of the time during the year but who did not earn a lot of money including those who paid little or no income tax. With EITC you may get a refund of some or all the money paid in taxes during the year and in certain cases, even more than what you paid because YOU EARNED IT

Who can get an EITC Refund?

Taxpayers with the earnings of or below $38,646 ($41,646 if married filing jointly) for families with two or more children; $33,995 ($36,995 married filing jointly) for families with one child or $12,880 ($15,880 married filing jointly) if there are no children should check to see if they qualify.

Eligible persons who worked all or part of the time during the year and are raising one or more children or persons ages 25 up to 64 who are NOT raising children.  This includes Immigrants, their spouses and children who have a valid Social Security number that allows them to work legally in the US.  Working Immigrants that only have an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) CANNOT get EITC but they can file an Income Tax Return and may be able to get Child Tax Credit and other tax benefits. Your filing status must be Single, Married Filing Jointly, Head of Household or Qualifying Widow or Widower to claim EITC.  Your filing status cannot be Married Filing Separate to claim the EITC.
